I think we like to recall and reminisce our firsts in life. First love. First house. First job. First time you successfully accomplished turning on a shower that is not your own. I always feel like an idiot at hotels. I turn into Avril Lavign as I stare at the shower and sing, "Why do you have to go and make things so complicated?” The struggle is real. Firsts are important in life. For Ricky Bobby, first place is important. For us, Jesus first miracle is important. If you don’t know yet what his first miracle was and prefer not to know here is your spoiler alert. You have the liberty to take that cursor (or finger) and exit out of this blog because I am about to spill the beans.
Miranda Lambert says it best “I heard Jesus he drank wine and I bet we get along just fine.” Well, I don’t know if he drank wine at this wedding, but his first miracle performed was turning water into wine. Now, that is definitely impressive. If I could turn water into wine, I bet I would double my friendships over night. But when I think of the power of Jesus I am left scratching my head. I mean if I were Jesus I would bring out the big guns for my first miracle. He didn’t cast out demons. He didn’t give sight to the blind. He didn’t make the lame walk. He didn’t bring someone back from the dead.
He took water and turned it into wine.
He mentions to his mother that it wasn’t his time yet. Maybe it wasn’t time to send off powerful miracle missiles and announce his mission to the masses. It makes sense why it was a mild miracle, but a miracle nonetheless. Picture this: You have 6 stone water jars holding up to 30 gallons of liquid. I’m going to do some quick math, which makes me cringe because I rather get a root canal than calculate numbers, but that leaves us with roughly 180 gallons of wine. Give or take a few gallons if my math is off.
Do you know why I secretly believe Jesus turned this water into wine when his mom came to him expectantly and informed him the wine was gone?
He didn’t want the party to end. Say it with me out loud and with gusto. He didn’t want the party to end!
